Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar was born in Alor Setar, Kedah in 1951. His family came from Hadramout, Yemen. Before deciding to live in Kedah, his father traveled to Central America to do business. There, his father went to Thailand. In the mid-40s, then the parent Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar decided to settle in Alor Setar, Kedah. In 1946, his father married.
Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar has seven siblings and he is the third child. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar live in conditions of deprivation and even wooden house in Kampung Hutan Keriang not have a bed, table or chair. This caused him difficult to assess.
Nevertheless, each of which occurs there must be some silver lining. The situation was also motivated him to start the free tuition as a welfare program under al-Bukhary Foundation established to contribute to the charity. Currently, 15,000 students benefited from the tuition program.
Education
Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar start school in Alor Setar but when he was 9 years old, he was sent to live with his uncle, Syed Omar in Johor Bahru. He was there from fourth grade up to grade eight. Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar then returned to his hometown in Alor Setar and continued his schooling until grade five at Saint Michael's School.
Actually, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar is not well-educated people. He has not been studied up to university level. However, this does not mean he was not knowledgeable. Most of the knowledge acquired through direct experience when he was active in the business world since childhood lagi.Disebabkan of his family who are less fortunate, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar helped her mother grow vegetables to support the family income. They sell it in the market at Jalan Telok Wan Jah. He also sells bread rolled in the same market.

During breaks at school, his father would see him at school and asked him to make bookkeeping. After school, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar help herding his father's pet quarantine center near the train station Alor Setar. He has a lot of knowledge and experience to perform such work.
Start trading
In 1970, his father's livestock business decline due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease. It spread to the rest of South Thailand, Kedah and Perlis. All livestock perished only. Since then, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar took over his father's business and decided to no longer engage in farming. He began selling meat on a small scale.
Actually, he went from town to town around Alor Setar to buy unsold meat. He then shared the meat packing ice and sell it back to the dealer Bumiputera and restaurants around Alor Setar. He was successful in that business. Adding that the success of his confidence to develop themselves in the business world.
From a business selling meat, he switched to the transportation business. In 1972, he managed to get a permit for the four trucks of Class A. He received a loan of RM110,000 from the MARA he used to buy two lorries Mercedes 911LS.
Setting up a company
In 1974, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar buy its first house in Jalan Telok Wan Jah under a hire purchase agreement with the UDA or Urban Development Corporation.
Next, in 1975, he established the company to apply for a trading license Shah and rice from the National Rice Board which is now known as Bernas. After successfully with the Company Shah, he set up a joint venture with two Chinese businessmen, namely Ng Ghiak and Chua Chong Tan Gee. Gee is Ghiak rice traders and millers of rice Chong Tan also.
In the joint venture company, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar holds 52 per cent stake while Ghiak Tan Chong Gee and 32 percent respectively and 16 per cent. Business venture named Bukhary Sdn. Bhd. it commenced operations on July 15, 1976, in his office at Jalan Telok Wan Jah.
Importance
He bought MMC Corporation, the engineering company at a price of RM3 per share of Saham Nasional Berhad (PNB). Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar also has a 22.7 percent stake in Malakoff Berhad, the electricity supply company and a 20 percent stake in IJM Corporation Berhad whose main business is manufacturing.

In addition, he has a 18 percent stake in Bernas involved in trading rice and 32 per cent stake in Pernas International Holdings Limited, a conglomerate involved in many business sectors. While 18.7 per cent stake in Fiamma Holdings Berhad, the marketing and distribution of electronic products and 100 per cent interest in MPH, the company's retail and distribution of books.
The objective of the Foundation al-Bukhary
Al-Bukhary Foundation was established in March 1996 as a charity which helped the poor, support the development of Islamic art and culture as well as promoting understanding between civilizations. The main objective of al-Bukhary Foundation is encouraging the Islamic brotherhood. The foundation consists of two parts. One part of doing charitable work, while one part is being arrange funds from any companies in which Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar no interest . Until now, al-Bukhary Foundation spent more than RM300 million for religious activities, culture and education. In addition, Yayasan Al-Bukhary only finance poor students. Among the initiatives undertaken to finance the poor Muslim students from around the ASEAN to study in Malaysia..
